Heat stress / stroke warning for owners

Due to the rising summer temperatures in the UK, the risk of Heat Stress/ Stroke is increased massively for dogs at the moment.

Owners and dog groomers (like myself) need to be very cautious to prevent any symptoms from showing up and especially escalating as the onset of heat stress is quick with little to no notice – once the signs of heat stress are detected, there is precious little time before it develops into heat stroke and serious illness.

What is heat stress?
Dogs don’t sweat like us humans, instead, they release heat by panting and also by sweating through their paw pads and nose. If they are unable to cool themselves enough their internal body temperature begins to rise and this can be fatal.

What can I do to prevent Heat Stress/ Stroke before my dog’s groom?
DO NOT walk your dog before an appointment
DO NOT walk your dog to the salon unless you live very close, no more than five minutes away from our location.
– If you are driving, please make sure the car is cool before setting off to your appointment
DO NOT allow your dog to sunbathe in your garden
– Make sure there’s water available at all times (we always have water available in our salon at all times, all year round)

What are the symptoms of Heat Stress/ Stroke?
– Excessive panting
– Excessive drooling
– Vomiting and diarrhoea
– Disorientation
– Bright red or blue gums

The Doghouse will NOT groom any dogs with any of these symptoms!!

The Doghouse has installed black-out blinds to try and reduce Heat Stress/ Stroke in our salon. We will soon have air conditioning to prevent this further.

Your dog’s health and safety comes first before anything else. We will not put your dog’s well-being in danger for any reason. If the salon’s temperature rises too much we will have to close (like we have had to today) and reschedule appointments.

We know this is frustrating but we hope as responsible owners, you will understand.

Many Thanks,
The Doghouse

Hi, I am Becca…

I am a City & Guilds qualified dog groomer. I completed my apprenticeship with Pets at Home, have gained experience in privately owned salons and am now the proud business owner of The Doghouse. I am also fully trained in canine first aid so you can be sure your dogs are in caring and safe hands at all times. I have two dogs of my own, a German Shepherd called Riley and a Maltese cross Yorkshire Terrier called Daisy, so I understand just how important and special any dog is to their owner. I look forward to meeting you all and your wonderful dogs.
